Petaluma was founded in 1976 on the simple belief that to make the best wine, you must plant the right grape varieties in the right regions. This is our ‘distinguished vineyards’ philosophy. Cabernet from Coonawarra, Chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills and Riesling from the Clare Valley remain the basis of the Petaluma range to this day.

We go beyond simply choosing the right region for the right grape variety; we select the individual site that will deliver the best possible outcome. All Petaluma sites have been meticulously chosen based on their aspect, soil, drainage and rainfall to ensure ultimate site expression with minimal inputs.

We tend our vineyards by hand, which is the only way to ensure optimum quality in varied terrain. This approach to picking and pruning is evident in all Petaluma’s finished wines.

Fruit from all three regions is crushed, vinified, matured and bottled in our state-of-the-art winery in the Adelaide Hills, which is the beating heart of Petaluma.

Vineyard Location

Adelaide Hills

Home to Petaluma’s winery and cellar door, the Adelaide Hills region is a vital source of fruit for our wines. Fruit for our Yellow Label Chardonnay is sourced entirely from our seven Piccadilly Valley vineyards, some of which are now more than 30 years in age.

Adelaide Hills has the coolest climate and highest elevation of wine regions in South Australia, with a global reputation for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz.

Clare Valley

With its ancient ghost gums, meandering creeks and golden wheat fields contrasting the green vines, Clare Valley is considered one of Australia’s most beautiful wine regions and solid Riesling country.

With a warm, moderate continental climate, hot summer days make way for cool afternoon and night breezes. The warm days ensure ripening is achieved with cool nights providing respite, slowing ripening and building complexity in aromatic varieties such as Riesling.

Petaluma sources its Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from Coonawarra. The Coonawarra is literally defined by a 12km long cigar-shaped slither of terra rossa soil over limestone.

Located in South Australia’s south east, the region lies 100km inland with a predominately maritime climate, with extensive cloud cover and ocean breezes acting to moderate the summer heat.

Winemaking Philosophy

Mike Mudge, Winemaker

Adelaide Hills born and bred, Mike graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree whilst working at the Petaluma winery in the early 1990s. He developed his passion for wine whilst working vintage in Oregon in 1995 and on his return home undertook his degree in Oenology at Charles Sturt University.

Mike was the Sparkling Winemaker for Croser from 2000 and in 2005 was promoted to Petaluma Winemaker in 2005, then Winemaker/Manager in 2010. He was instrumental in the build and transition of Petaluma to its new state of the art winery at Woodside in 2014.

Now in his 30th year at Petaluma he brings a breadth of experience and knowledge in all facets of the business from vine to glass. Mike has been blessed with exceptional vineyards that display the true expression of the varieties that Petaluma produces.
